Das Verhältnis zum Anderen ist Verhältnis zum Antlitz. Und Antlitz kann natürlich Thema einer Anschauung sein: wenn ich von jemandem spreche, von der Farbe seiner Augen, von der Linie seiner Nase, von der Höhe seiner Stirne. Aber ich habe das Verhältnis zum Antlitz in gewissem Sinne schon verloren, französisch kann man es sehr gut sagen: dévisager le visage. Aber das Verhältnis zum Antlitz ist nicht Verhältnis zu einem Thema. Das Verhältnis zum Antlitz als solchem ist gar nicht intentional zu denken. Der Andere ist nicht mein Thema, wenn ich dem Antlitz begegne – in der Begegnung ist meine Ergebenheit an den Anderen das erste. Im Antlitz erscheint der Andere als nackt und verloren und einzig zu sein. Natürlich, diese Einzigkeit ist schon caché, jeder Mensch gibt sich einen gewissen Anstand. Im Anstand des Menschen wird seine Einzigartigkeit, eigentlich seine Sterblichkeit sichtbar. Antlitz ist das Direkte, eine exposition, pure exposition… eine Ausgesetztheit natürlich. Das Verhältnis zu dieser Ausgesetztheit ist nicht ein Betrachten dieser Ausgesetztheit, das ist schon das Verhältnis der Hingabe, des Gebens. Das Antlitz ist immer ein Antlitz als eine ausgestreckte Hand. Aber außerdem gibt es in diesem Verhältnis zum Antlitz noch ein zweites Moment: Dieses Gebe-mir, dieses Verlangen, diese Bitte ist auch ein Befehl. In diesem Sinne ist Antlitz ganz desobjektiviert, kein Gegenstand. In der Nacktheit, Verlorenheit, in dieser mortalité steckt ein Befehl. Und mir schien also hier das Wort Gott auf seiner richtigen phänomenologischen Stelle zu stehen. Wie soll ich sagen: Also die Situation, wo so etwas wie Gott ins Denken kommt, ist nicht die Schönheit der Welt und die Schöpfung, sondern gerade dieses »Du sollst nicht töten«, das mir durch diese Ausgesetztheit auf den Tod, durch diese Auswendigkeit des Gesichtes, des Antlitzes gesagt wird.
Liebe
Der Andere, den ich in seinem Antlitz anrede oder zu dem ich in seinem Antlitz verpflichtet bin, ist natürlich in diesem Moment der einzige auf der Welt. Ich meine, im Verhältnis zum Antlitz besteht hier nicht ein einziger Fall eines Genus; der Mensch fällt raus von seinem Genus und ist einzig. Ich meine, man kann dieses Verhältnis Liebe nennen; diese Fertigkeit der Opfer ist Liebe, das, was Pascal “amour sans concupiscence” genannt hat. Levinas

Here’s the story of Bonnie and Clyde.
Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang,
I’m sure you all have read
how they rob and steal
And those who squeal are usually found dying or dead.
There’s lots of untruths to those write-ups
They’re not so ruthless as that
Their nature is raw, they hate all law
Stool pigeons, spotters, and rats.
They call them cold-blooded killers
They say they are heartless and mean
But I say this with pride, I once knew Clyde
When he was honest and upright and clean.
But the laws fooled around and taking him down
and locking him up in a cell
‘Till he said to me, “I’ll never be free
So I’ll meet a few of them in hell.”
The road was so dimly lighted
There were no highway signs to guide
But they made up their minds if all roads were blind
They wouldn’t give up ’till they died.
The road gets dimmer and dimmer
